BMB has purchased a Berti mulcher that is attached to its 20ton Sumitomo excavator. Alien vegetation such as black wattles and blue gums are mulched in the river protected zones without disturbing the natural soils and eco-system.
BMB is busy with the construction of a 200 000 m3 Category 2 storage dam at Hiltop with a 16 meter high wall. The dam will afford BMB the luxury of storing winter water. The project is supervised by Pierre Storey of Storey Consulting Engineers for DWAF and by Cape EA Prac for the DEAP.
BMB’s newest orchards are the establishment of 26ha of MBO varieties, with Eureka and First Blush being the prominent varieties. The plantings are under shade-net with drip irrigation and Spilo weedstop for weed control. The first commercial harvests from these varieties is expected in 2019.
Some of the BMB Social Development Trust trustees visited Luthando Creche on the 19th of June 2018. The Trust was able to provide the toddlers with tables and chairs in order for them to sit comfortably while writing or participating in art work. Non-profit organisations such as these are nominated by employees and purchases are made according to need and budget.
During the 2016 Waitrose Management courtesy visit BMB undertook to investigate green energy as part of its environmental awareness and sustainability. With the new BMB packhouse development, an additional advantage of the packhouse was 1650m² of north facing roof space. This lend itself for the installation of a solar system to supply a steady stream of solar electricity through the year to reduce possible blackouts and dependence on ESKOM. The project creates sustainable income for the BMB SDT beneficiaries. Through a process of enterprise development, a portion of the income goes to charitable purposes in the community and the implementation of renewable green energy is addressed.
